Neurological Rehabilitation

Activities of the Operational Unit

The Operating Unit welcomes in Ordinary Hospitalization mainly patients transferred directly from hospital facilities – in particular from the Neurology, Neurosurgery, Intensive Care, Medicine Units – and a selection of home patients, sent by General Practitioners or outpatient Specialist Doctors , who require an intensive rehabilitation program.

In line with what is established by the Regional Regulation on the " Reorganisation of the Rehabilitation Network " of December 2004 and the Ministerial Guidelines of February 2011, the main pathologies treated are:

injuries of the Central nervous system of vascular nature: after-effects of ischemic stroke o hemorrhagic, multi-infarct encephalopathy
neurodegenerative diseases: Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism, motor neuron diseases
diseases demyelinating (Multiple sclerosis)
after-effects of trauma: cranial and spinal cord injuries
spinal cord injuries
after-effects of operations neurosurgery
pathologies of Peripheral Nervous System (dysimmune, toxic-metabolic and inflammatory neuropathies)
vegetative states of traumatic and non-traumatic origin (severe acquired brain injuries)

The unit is divided into four floors and has 110 SSN-accredited beds . Patients are accommodated in one-, two-, or three-bed rooms, each with a private bathroom and TV.

Rehabilitation Approach

The approach offered to patients is bio-psycho-social , aimed at managing the complexities of rehabilitation by addressing issues related not only to the patient's biological sphere, but also to their socio-environmental, cultural, emotional, and relational spheres. It is implemented by a multi-specialist team of professionals who design and implement the rehabilitation project and programs in collaboration with the patient and their family.

Multidisciplinary Team

The rehabilitation team , coordinated by the Department Director, is composed of:

Specialist doctors from different disciplines (Physiatry, Neurology, Infectious Diseases, Cardiology, Pulmonology, and Internal Medicine)
Neuropsychologists
Physiotherapists
Speech therapists
Occupational Therapists
nurses
Social worker

La interdisciplinary management avoids sectoral approaches to the patient and allows the integration of individual skills within the common perspective of the functional recovery and social reintegration.
Furthermore, the presence of multiple internal diagnostic and therapeutic-assistance services guarantees each patient a integrated care, rehabilitation and therapeutic pathway that can meet the specific care needs of the individual.

Individual Rehabilitation Projects

Individual Rehabilitation Projects are conducted according to a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach , placing particular emphasis on the integration of the various interventions: from the diagnostic framework to the subsequent identification of specific needs , the object of the rehabilitation intervention, up to the definition of individual rehabilitation programs aimed at recovering residual abilities and reintegrating into social life.

Clinical-Care Pathways

Over the years, increasing attention has been paid to defining internal diagnostic and treatment pathways for the main neurological pathologies treated ( stroke, Parkinson's disease, dementia syndromes, multiple sclerosis , motor neuron diseases), in accordance with the most recent sector guidelines , in order to guarantee a homogeneous and high-quality clinical-care pathway.

Rehabilitation Intervention Areas

Il individual rehabilitation program, placed within the Individual Rehabilitation Project, defines the specific areas of intervention, the immediate and short-term objectives, the operators involved, the times, the methods of delivery and their verification.
