Headache Diagnosis and Treatment Center
The Level II Headache Diagnosis and Treatment Center is accredited by the Lombardy Region.
The Headache Center aims to provide the correct assessment of headache patients, using instrumental investigation techniques and treatment strategies that follow scientific evidence, as well as a multidisciplinary approach (cardiology, endocrinology, internal medicine, and neurosurgery).
New therapies for the treatment of migraine:
As part of innovative headache therapies, the Center is authorized to prescribe new medications for migraine prophylaxis in adults, including monoclonal antibodies. These are a prophylactic therapy aimed at reducing the intensity and frequency of attacks, which involves a monthly subcutaneous injection administered by the patient themselves after obtaining a treatment plan (fully reimbursed by the National Health Service). Gepants, next-generation molecules for migraine prophylaxis, are also prescribed at the Center using the same method. These are taken as oral tablets.
Monoclonal antibodies and gepants currently represent the future of chronic migraine treatment because they are able to block a substance called CGRP, which is responsible for the painful phase.
The Center is among the first in Lombardy for the treatment of migraine patients with new therapies, currently having over 700 patients treated with these drugs.
The treatment plan is drawn up solely by the Center's neurologists, who are experts in headache and are authorized to prescribe on the AIFA platform. After careful evaluation and application of selection criteria, they include the patient in the treatment plan and monitor them over time with periodic visits scheduled according to indications and needs.
The pathologies treated:
- migraine with and without aura
- trigeminal neuralgia
- cluster headache
- tension headache
- headache in adolescents
- craniofacial pain and occipital neuralgia
The Center also performs botulinum toxin therapy (Dr. Tullo), diagnostic and therapeutic assessment of headaches attributed to disorders of the cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, neurological management of patients with headache and Chiari Malformation (Dr. Curone).
At the same time, scientific research is carried out in the field of headaches.
The Center is directed by Dr. Vincenzo Tullo and Dr. Marcella Curone who have gained extensive experience in clinical and research activity in the field of diagnosis and treatment of headaches and who for years have worked alongside Prof. Bussone, a national and international reference for cephalalgic pathology, Chief Emeritus of Neurology and Founder of the Headache Center of the Neurological Institute "Carlo Besta" in Milan and Founder of the Headache Center of the Casa di Cura Igea.
