Headache Diagnosis and Treatment Center
The Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Headaches of the second level accredited by the Lombardy Region of the Casa di Cura Igea takes care of the patient with every type of headache, primary and secondary, in a diagnostic-therapeutic path that begins with the outpatient evaluation with the prescription and execution of diagnostic tests aimed at and the appropriate therapeutic choice, possibly arriving also at hospitalization in the most complex cases.
The activity of the Headache Center aims to provide a correct classification of the headache patient using instrumental investigation techniques and treatment strategies that follow scientific evidence, as well as a multidisciplinary approach (cardiological, endocrinological, internal medicine and neurosurgical). Weaning treatments are planned for those forms of chronic headache complicated by the excessive use of analgesics and resistant to prophylactic therapies.
In the field of innovative therapies in the field of headaches, the Center is authorized to prescribe new biological drugs for the prophylaxis of migraine in adults, monoclonal antibodies, or a prophylactic therapy aimed at reducing the intensity and frequency of attacks, which involves a simple subcutaneous injection that the patient administers independently after prescription, in selected cases, of a therapeutic plan (fully reimbursed by the NHS) by the accredited Center.
Monoclonal antibodies currently represent the future of chronic migraine treatment because they are able to block a substance called CGRP, responsible for the painful phase.
Several clinical studies have demonstrated the high tolerability and efficacy of monoclonal antibodies in migraine.
The release of the therapeutic plan is carried out exclusively by the neurologists of the Center, experts in headaches, authorized to prescribe on the AIFA platform, who after a careful evaluation and application of restrictive selection criteria, insert the patient into the treatment and follow him/her over time, guaranteeing periodic and scheduled visits with the NHS.
The Center also performs botulinum toxin therapy (Dr. Tullo), diagnostic and therapeutic assessment of headaches attributed to disorders of the cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, neurological management of patients with headache and Chiari Malformation (Dr. Curone).
At the same time, scientific research is carried out in the field of headaches.
The Center is directed by Dr. Vincenzo Tullo and Dr. Marcella Curone who have gained extensive experience in clinical and research activity in the field of diagnosis and treatment of headaches and who for years have worked alongside Prof. Bussone, a national and international reference for cephalalgic pathology, Chief Emeritus of Neurology and Founder of the Headache Center of the Neurological Institute "Carlo Besta" in Milan and Founder of the Headache Center of the Casa di Cura Igea.
