Introduction

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. Every year in Italy, more than 55.000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed. Early diagnosis, supported by regular screening and a healthy lifestyle, significantly improves clinical outcomes. In its early stages, the cancer is highly curable (95-97%) with conservative and body-conserving procedures.

The clinic is part of the inter-company Breast Unit ( Multimedica – San Giuseppe – Castellanza – Casa di Cura IGEA ), which operates according to a certified PDTA and guarantees a multidisciplinary and coordinated path in all phases of diagnosis and treatment.

Intercompany Breast Unit

The inter-company Breast Unit is made up of a multidisciplinary team that works closely together to ensure comprehensive care and a coordinated treatment plan.

The following work in synergy within the structure:

  • Breast surgeons
  • Reconstructive breast surgeon
  • Oncologists
  • Breast radiologists
  • Pathologists
  • Gynecologists
  • Geneticists

The team is available to communicate with general practitioners , promoting continuity of care and uniformity in clinical decisions.

Diagnostic and therapeutic decisions are discussed collegially in multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs) , which are a cornerstone of certified Breast Units. From this discussion, personalized treatment plans are developed, tailored to the patient's specific clinical needs.

Breast Radiology

The Breast Radiology unit uses high-tech instruments for the diagnosis of breast pathology:

  • 2D digital mammography and 3D tomosynthesis
  • Breast ultrasound
  • 16-channel breast MRI
  • Ultrasound-guided breast biopsies
  • Mammographically guided breast biopsies (Tomo-Biopsy with 3D vertical stereotactic system for non-palpable lesions or microcalcifications)

These methods allow the identification of even small lesions and guarantee high diagnostic accuracy.
The latest technologies also allow for a reduction in radiation dose thanks to better centering and a smaller number of exposures required.

The results of the histological tests are communicated directly by the breast surgeon , who explains to the patient the clinical picture and the therapeutic proposals defined in the multidisciplinary setting.

Senology

Each procedure is planned after careful counseling with the patient, who receives clear and comprehensive information on the proposed procedure.

The surgical team performs targeted interventions based on the stage and type of disease.

Among the procedures performed:

  • Quadrantectomy
  • Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
  • Removal of non-palpable lesions (with magnetic system Sentimag)
  • Lymphadenectomy
  • Skin-sparing mastectomy
  • Mastectomy with sparing of the nipple-areola complex
  • Immediate reconstruction with expander or definitive prosthesis

The facility guarantees hospitalization and intervention in a short time , approximately within 15 days with the National Health Service.

Oncology

The Oncologists of the Breast Unit deal with the planning and administration of pharmacological therapies, both in the neoadjuvant (pre-surgery) and post-surgery phases , following updated and personalized protocols for each case.

The team also manages breast disease follow-up , monitoring the patient over time to ensure continuity of care and timely subsequent interventions.

Genetics

For patients who meet specific clinical criteria, the Breast Unit offers the option of testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutations , following a consultation with a geneticist and oncologist. This analysis allows us to identify any hereditary predispositions and plan personalized surveillance or interventions.
