Senology

Breast cancer is the most common neoplasm in women, although it can occur in men to a lesser extent. (More than 55.000 new cases are diagnosed in Italy each year).

Prevention, which is achieved through correct lifestyles (nutritional and physical), but even more so early diagnosis based on good health education by undergoing periodic check-ups, still represents the main objective in the treatment of breast cancer.

The Igea Nursing Home is an integral part of the joint Breast Unit (operational units dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer): Multimedica – S. Giuseppe – Castellanza, and follows the criteria and PDTA of the same.

Individualized medical or surgical decisions result from multidisciplinary collegial discussions.

Team

The multidisciplinary team composed of:

  • Senology Surgeons
  • Plastic surgeon
  • Medical Oncologists
  • Radiologists Senologists
  • Pathology
  • Geneticist
  • Gynecologist

which, in addition to treating benign and malignant breast disease, takes care of the patient who must face a sometimes long and difficult process, accompanying her throughout her journey.

The team performs all appropriate interventions related to breast pathology (Quadrantectomy, Sentinel lymph node biopsy, Lymphadenectomy, Mastectomy with sparing of the skin and nipple-areola complex and immediate reconstruction with Expander or Definitive Prosthesis and interventions with rotation of skin-muscle flaps, Lipofilling).

In Casa Dì Cura Igea, hospitalization and intervention are ensured in a short time (15 days) with the NHS in welcoming 2-bed rooms with private facilities and television.

Surgical Team

  • Dr A. Magro (Breast Surgeon-Gynecologist Head and Coordinator of the Breast Unit Igea)
  • Dr M. Maino (Breast Surgeon)
  • Dr. M. Mezzabotta (Specialist in General Surgery, Expert in Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery, Oncology, Reconstructive, Breast Surgery)

Radiologists Senology

  • Dr. L. Carra (Radiologist-Breast Specialist)
  • Dr. S. Di Gennaro (Radiologist-Breast Cancer Specialist)
  • Dr. MG Sfondrini (Radiologist-Breast Specialist)
  • Dr. M. Sporeni (Radiologist-Senologist)

The team of radiologists performs Mammograms with 3D Tomosynthesis, Ultrasound, latest generation Breast Magnetic Resonance, Breast Biopsies both under ultrasound and mammographic guidance with Vertical Stereotactic System and Tomo Biopsy for non-palpable lesions (smaller than 1 cm or micro calcifications) not visible on ultrasound but on traditional mammography or tomosynthesis.

This new technology allows for the optimization of the centering of even the smallest lesions, reducing the radiation dose to the patient thanks to the smaller number of exposures required.

The HOLOGIC Selenia Dimension 3D digital mammograph, tested in January 2017, is equipped with latest generation applications such as:

  • C-View™ software: the only clinically validated one that allows you to have a reconstructed 2D image without dose delivery.
  • innovative acquisition station: simplifies the technician's activity and improves work procedures.
  • Affirm™ Breast Biopsy System: Enables easier and faster 2D and 3D stereotactic procedures.

The X-ray tube sweeps seamlessly over the breast in a 15-degree arc to acquire a series of low-dose projections from multiple angles.

Thanks to dedicated algorithms, the projections are reconstructed in the 3D image of the breast.

With C-View™ software, the mammographer generates the 2D image from the Tomosynthesis data.

Both modalities (Tomosynthesis with conventional mammography and Tomosynthesis with 2D reconstructed images) offer clinically proven performance that is superior to 2D mammography alone.

Affirm™ Tomosynthesis-guided biopsy enables faster localization of lesions, with greater accuracy, patient comfort, and less X-ray exposure.

Should it be necessary to perform a Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging, the very recent installation (February 2021) of the Siemens MAGNETOM Sola RM system, the most modern technology available today for 1,5 Tesla RM imaging, combined with the use of a dedicated coil with 18 channels, guarantees the possibility of acquiring multi-parametric images at very high resolution and at the same time unique comfort for patients. Its 18 independent channels provide exceptional capabilities resulting in high-speed image acquisition. The software dedicated to post-processing of the acquired images allows our specialists to interpret the results in the most realistic way possible.

Multidisciplinary Senology Activities

Breast diagnostic tools allow radiologists to organize, with the help of a dedicated secretary, the in-depth examinations necessary to complete the diagnostic process within a few days.

The results of the tests performed are communicated by the breast surgeon who, in addition to talking to the patient and explaining the content, illustrates the therapeutic decisions of the case and simultaneously organizes the intervention in a short time (after MDM discussion), sets the next check-up in case of benign pathology.

This process is appreciated by patients both for the timeliness of the diagnosis and for always having the same doctors as a point of reference.

 Oncology Team

  • Dr. A. Ghidini (Head of Oncology)
  • Dr. R. Bukovec
  • Dr. L. Roncari
  • Mrs. S. Viadana (Oncology Secretary)

The Oncology team provides for the administration of medical therapy (chemotherapy and biological drugs), discusses with the patient the therapeutic treatment of the case according to personalized schemes both in the neoadjuvant phase (for advanced stage tumors or with particular molecular biology characteristics) and in the adjuvant phase (after surgical treatment).

Performs follow-up of breast pathology.
