Senology
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women, although it occurs to a lesser extent in men. (More than 55.000 new cases are diagnosed in Italy each year.)
Prevention, but even more so, early diagnosis achieved through healthy lifestyles (dietary and physical) and good health education (regular check-ups), still represents the primary goal in breast cancer treatment today, allowing for interventions that respect body image.
Multidisciplinary Team
In home di IGEA treatment there is one multidisciplinary team composed of:
- Senology Surgeons
- Medical Oncologists
- Radiologists Senologists
- Pathology
- Geneticist
- Gynecologist
In addition to treating benign and malignant breast disease, she takes care of the patient who must face a sometimes long and difficult process, accompanying her on her journey.
The multidisciplinary team is available to collaborate with general practitioners.
Breast Unit
The multi-specialist clinic is an integral part of the Breast Unit joint with Multimedica S. Giuseppe – Castellanza and Igea Nursing Home. Sfollows the criteria and the PDTA of the same.
Multidisciplinary collegial discussions, conducted for both pre-operative and post-operative cases, result in personalized medical or surgical decisions.
Surgical Team
- Dr. A. Magro (Breast Surgeon– Gynecologist, Coordinator Breast Igea Unit)
- Dr. M. Maino (General and Breast Surgery)
- Dr. M. Mezzabotta (Breast and Reconstructive Surgery)
The team performs all appropriate interventions based on at the stadium of the disease:
- Quadrantectomy
- Sentinel lymph node biopsynon-palpable lesions (with System Feelmag)
- Lymphadenectomy
- Skin-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction using a definitive expander or prosthesis.
All interventions are performed after counseling with the patient and acceptance of the proposed intervention.
At the IGEA Nursing Home, short-term hospitalization and intervention (approximately 15 days) are guaranteed by the National Health Service in comfortable 2-bed rooms with private bathrooms and televisions.
Radiologists Senology
- Dr. L. Carra (Radiologist-Breast Specialist)
- Dr. S. Di Gennaro (Radiologist-Breast Cancer Specialist)
- Dr. MG Sfondrini (Radiologist-Breast Specialist)
- Dr. M. Sporeni (Radiologist-Senologist)
The team of radiologists performs Mammograms with 3D Tomosynthesis, Ultrasound, latest generation Breast Magnetic Resonance, Breast Biopsies both under ultrasound and mammographic guidance with Vertical Stereotactic System and Tomo Biopsy for non-palpable lesions (smaller than 1 cm or micro calcifications) not visible on ultrasound but on traditional mammography or tomosynthesis.
This new technology allows for the optimization of the centering of even the smallest lesions, reducing the radiation dose to the patient thanks to the smaller number of exposures required.
The HOLOGIC Selenia Dimension 3D digital mammography system, tested in January 2017, features applications such as:
- C-View™ software: the only clinically validated one that allows you to have a reconstructed 2D image without dose delivery.
- innovative acquisition station: simplifies the technician's activity and improves work procedures.
- Affirm™ Breast Biopsy System: Enables easier and faster 2D and 3D stereotactic procedures.
The X-ray tube sweeps seamlessly over the breast in a 15-degree arc to acquire a series of low-dose projections from multiple angles.
Thanks to dedicated algorithms, the projections are reconstructed in the 3D image of the breast.
With C-View™ software, the mammographer generates the 2D image from the Tomosynthesis data.
Both modalities (Tomosynthesis with conventional mammography and Tomosynthesis with 2D reconstructed images) offer clinically proven performance that is superior to 2D mammography alone.
Affirm™ Tomosynthesis-guided biopsy enables faster localization of lesions, with greater accuracy, patient comfort, and less X-ray exposure.
Should a breast MRI be necessary, the installation (February 2021) of a MRI with modern 1.5 Tesla MRI technology, combined with the use of a dedicated 18-channel coil, guarantees the ability to acquire ultra-high-resolution multi-parametric images while providing unparalleled patient comfort. Its 18 independent channels provide exceptional capabilities, resulting in high-speed image acquisition. Dedicated post-processing software for the acquired images allows our specialists to interpret the results as realistically as possible.
Multidisciplinary Senology Activities
Breast diagnostic tools allow radiologists to organize, with the help of a dedicated secretary, the in-depth examinations necessary to complete the diagnostic process within a few days.
The results of the tests performed are communicated by the breast surgeon who, in addition to talking to the patient and explaining the content, illustrates the therapeutic decisions of the case and simultaneously organizes the intervention in a short time (after MDM discussion), sets the next check-up in case of benign pathology.
This process is appreciated by patients both for the timeliness of the diagnosis and for always having the same doctors as a point of reference.
Oncology Team
- Dr. A. Ghidini (Head of Oncology)
- Dr. R. Bukovec
- Dr. L. Roncari
- Mrs. S. Viadana (Oncology Secretary)
The Oncology team provides for the administration of medical therapy (chemotherapy and biological drugs), discusses with the patient the therapeutic treatment of the case according to personalized schemes both in the neoadjuvant phase (for advanced stage tumors or with particular molecular biology characteristics) and in the adjuvant phase (after surgical treatment).
Performs follow-up of breast pathology.
