What is CT scan?

CT , or Computerized Axial Tomography ( now more correctly called CT , Computed Tomography ), is a diagnostic imaging test that uses ionizing radiation (specifically X-rays ) and a computerized system to obtain detailed images of the inside of the body . The name “ CT ” is now preferred because modern equipment is no longer limited to the axiality of the X-ray beam alone, allowing for more complete and multidimensional scans.

Difference between CT and MRI

Although both tests provide detailed images of the body , CT scans use X-rays , while MRI scans use magnetic fields and radio waves . The choice between the two tests depends on the specific clinical condition assessed by the doctor.

What diseases are seen?

A CT scan is ordered by your doctor to diagnose a number of medical conditions , including:

  • Traumas
  • Infections
  • Tumors
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic treatments
  • Follow-up of the evolution (monitoring of the progress) of the disease

How do you prepare for the exam?

In the days leading up to the diagnostic test , you may be asked to follow some specific instructions, such as fasting or temporarily stopping certain medications.

On the day of the exam, once the patient has been admitted to our clinic, they will be cared for by a dedicated healthcare assistant who will accompany them for the entire duration of the exam.

During this phase, the patient will also be supported by specialized healthcare personnel who will take the patient's medical history . This moment is essential to verify the presence of all the conditions necessary to carry out the diagnostic test in complete safety , ensuring a peaceful and protected diagnostic process.

The patient will have access to a private changing room where they can put on a special gown provided by the clinic and leave their personal belongings.

In order not to compromise the quality of the examination, healthcare professionals will indicate to the patient everything that will need to be removed (e.g. earrings, necklaces, hearing aids or dentures, piercings ).

If a contrast medium test is requested , you will need to bring a creatinine test (performed via a simple blood sample) taken within the three months prior to the test. The contrast medium will be administered intravenously and is designed to improve the visibility of internal body structures.

How is the exam carried out?

During a CT scan , the patient lies on a mobile table that slides inside the machine . It is important to remain still to ensure high-quality images . The medical staff observes the examination in an adjacent room and is in constant visual contact with the patient thanks to the glass walls. They can also communicate any necessary instructions via an intercom.

How long does the exam last?

The CT scan is generally quick (from less than a minute to 10/11 minutes), with a variable duration depending on the type of exam prescribed.

What are the risks of CT scan?

The CT scan is painless . In some cases, the contrast fluid may cause a slight sensation of widespread warmth and a metallic taste in the mouth , but these effects are temporary, normal, and short-lived.

To patients with known allergies to the contrast fluid a recommendation may be made anti-allergy prophylaxis.
La kidney function will be evaluated through the creatinine test.

Like any examination using X-rays , CT scans involve exposure to radiation . However, thanks to the advanced technology of our equipment, exposure is reduced to a minimum , ensuring maximum patient safety . Furthermore, the high speed of diagnostic image acquisition allows for optimized use of contrast medium , particularly in vascular and cardiovascular examinations, significantly reducing the amount required.

The risks are generally very low, but it's always essential to carefully evaluate the risk-benefit ratio based on your specific clinical situation. For this reason, it can only be administered with a doctor's prescription.

Who can't have a CT scan?

Women who are pregnant or suspected to be pregnant cannot undergo this diagnostic test.

What does the CT scan machine look like?

A CT scan uses an X-ray tube that rotates around the patient, acquiring images from different angles. These images are then processed by a computer to create detailed cross-sections of the area being examined.

The CT scan machine consists of a large ring (gantry) inside which the X-ray tube rotates . The movable table allows the patient to be positioned correctly for the examination inside the tunnel.

Our clinic uses a latest-generation CT scan, the Siemens SOMATOM Force , which represents the third generation of dual -tube/detector system equipment.

  • More detailed images: 192 slices for each detector, compared to 128 slices in the previous model, offering more precise images.
  • Super fast exams: Thanks to the “Turbo Flash” mode, the CT machine can acquire images up to 737 mm per second, making the examination faster and more comfortable for the patient.
  • Even sharper details: The spatial resolution is 0,24 mm, improving image quality compared to the previous resolution of 0,30 mm. This allows for highly detailed reports that allow physicians to better interpret the results and make clinical diagnoses.
  • Less contrast medium: The high speed allows for the use of a reduced amount of contrast medium in vascular and cardiovascular examinations, improving patient comfort.
  • Greater security: Thanks to the Stellar Infinity detector and “LowDose” protocols, the SOMATOM Force significantly reduces radiation exposure while maintaining excellent image quality.
  • Very low radiation doses: This technology allows for tests such as the study of coronary artery calcifications to be performed with a minimal dose of radiation, increasing patient safety.
